Sonny Tomic Senior Urban Designer City of Calgary

Sonny is an award-winning Urban Designer with more than twenty years of experience in small, medium-and large scale projects in Planning/Urban design, Architecture and Landscape architecture in Canada , Europe and Carribean. Currently, he has the position of Senior Urban Designer with the City of Calgary, Planning Department, Centre City Planning and Design Section, and he is also an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies at the University of Calgary.

Sonny is a passionate advocate for the high quality city development, architectural and public realm design. His appreciation of the different aspects of urban design and the inter-relationships between built form and public open spaces is revealed in his comprehensive award-winning approach to urban design. 

Sonny was involved in a broad range of projects-from Downtown revitalization/ renewal, design of public spaces and streetscapes, waterfront developments, renewal of military bases - to master planning and design of new mixed-use communities. Currently, he is invited by the Canadian Institute of Planners to participate in the development of urban design vision for Gonzales Community in the Port of Spain ( Trinidad and Tobago ). Project is funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Sonny's award portfolio includes the 2005 and 1998 Canadian Institute of Planners Urban Design Awards for Downtown Planning,1998 Gold Award from the Economic Development Association of Canada, the 2005 And 1998 Ontario Professional Planners Institute Outstanding Planning and Professional Merit Awards, 2000 Hamilton Sustainable Community Award, and Ontario March of Dimes 2003 Barrier-free Award. His continuous high performance and innovative approaches to urban design brought him recently four City of Calgary Achievement Awards .

Sonny is an active member of the Alberta Design Think Tank-an informal body of design professionals committed to improve quality of design in Alberta . He is co-founder of Canadian Institute of Planners National Urban Design Initiative (NUDIG), and Ontario Urban Design Working Group. Sonny is also a immediate past Contributing Editor for Urban Design for Plan Canada Journal.  In the past he was guest lecturer at the University of West Indies (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago), University of Calgary, University of Waterloo, University of York and Ryerson in Toronto and McMaster University in Hamilton and spoke on several planning conferences in Canada (Alberta, Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan) and Europe.
